Four Charges Against Man Who Defrauded Newtown Resident
Newtown Police have, with the assistance of a New York police department, arrested a person they believe defrauded a local resident.
Yun Dan Li, 36, of Flushing, N.Y., was extradited from Nassau County Correctional Center yesterday upon the issuance of an arrest warrant by Newtown Police Department following an investigation that began in March.
Li has been charged with one count each of Telephone Fraud-1st Degree, a Class B felony; Conspiracy to Commit Telephone Fraud-1st Degree, a Class B felony; Larceny-2nd Degree, a Class C felony; and Conspiracy to Commit Larceny-2nd Degree, a class C felony.
Li was unable to post a court-set bond of $100,000 and was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court today.
According to Newtown Police, they were contacted by a Newtown resident on March 19, 2024, after the resident fell victim to a fraud. The resident told police that a message had popped up on their computer stating their computer had been hacked, and it provided a contact phone number.
Upon contacting the phone number provided, the resident spoke to an individual on the phone who stated that the computer was hacked, the complainant’s bank accounts may be compromised, and transferred the complainant to an alleged bank representative.
The alleged bank representative directed the resident to withdraw money from the bank account and sent a courier to pick up the money so that it could be secured.
The resident was able to obtain the registration plate and a photograph of the driver who showed up to collect the money. Upon completion of the transaction, the alleged bank representative attempted to get additional cash from the resident.
At that time, Newtown Police Department was contacted.
The Newtown PD Patrol Division investigated and with the assistance of Nassau County Police Department in New York, obtained evidence needed for an arrest warrant.
On December 4, custody of Li, who was 35 at the time of the incident, was transferred to Newtown Police Department. He was extradited to Connecticut pursuant to this arrest warrant.
Newtown Police Department reminds residents to not make money transfers or purchase gift cards at the request of callers and not to provide personal information.
