Police Plan Crackdown On Drunken Driving
Town police have received grant approvals to conduct heightened enforcement of drunken driving laws during the coming year, according to Sergeant Douglas Wisentaner.
The enforcement is conducted during times when drunken driving may be occurring at higher than normal rates, such as holiday periods. The federal grant money will cover 75 percent of police overtime costs for heightened DUI enforcement.
Police plan to hold five sobriety checkpoints between now and September, and also conduct more than 600 hours of roving patrols to expand enforcement of drunken driving laws.
Police will be participating in the national enforcement campaign known as, âOver the Limit. Under Arrest.â That project is slated for the periods of December 13 through 31 and also August 21 through September 7, 2009.
The policeâs goal through heightened DUI enforcement is to reduce the number of drunken driving-related injuries and fatalities through high-visibility enforcement.
Police publicize their increased enforcement to deter drunken driving from occurring, according to Sgt Wisentaner.
