Occupation: I'm a stay-at-home mom, now. I used to be a call center manager for a large retailer in England.
Occupation: Iâm a stay-at-home mom, now. I used to be a call center manager for a large retailer in England.
Family: My husband, Martin, and I have been married for 19 years. I love him to bits. We have three children, Mitchell, 9; Harvey, 7; and Scarlett, 4. All of my extended family is in England.
Pets: Iâve got a Wheaton terrier called Molly. Sheâs 2 years old and just a good family dog. Sheâs great with the kids, and she doesnât shed a hair.
How long have you lived in Newtown? We moved to America for Martinâs job with Perkin Elmer in August of 2005 and moved into our home here in October of that year.
What do you like to do in your free time? We love doing family things together, like going out to eat or going to the movies. And as a couple, we love to go out either just the two of us or with friends. Itâs important to have time together. I love reading, too, and renting videos, and just hanging out.
Do you have a favorite book? I read Pillars of the Earth this summer by Ken Follett and it was incredible. Then I got into reading the Philippa Gregory novels about King Henry and his wives, and they were fascinating. I just finished reading For Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum. It was harrowing, but so moving. I like books that have a sense of history.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I have been so many places. I was born in England and I lived in Zambia, with my father, for ten years, and traveled to South Africa to attend boarding school there. Then I went back to England after high school. I met Martin and we traveled extensively. Itâs hard to pick a favorite place, but I would like to take my children back to Africa on a safari and to see the night sky there, and Iâd love to go back to Greece with my husband. Nothing beats a sunset there.
What is the best thing about Newtown? The people, of course, are a given. Coming from England, I have to say that people here take for granted all of the open space. We just donât have that in England, so I really appreciate it. And the number of opportunities for sports and activities in town for the kids is wonderful. Iâm amazed by all of the people who volunteer to help, too. We have great schools here and the teachers are very positive and focused. We are blessed to be here, we really are.
If you could do something you have never done, what would it be? Iâd like to learn to snow ski. Iâve never had the opportunity and the first two winters we lived here, the whole cold thing got to me. But I think if I learned to ski it might help me get over the winter.
Do you have a personal philosophy? Never feel guilty about spending time with your significant other. Donât lose your sense of self. One day your kids will grow up and be gone and you will only have each other again.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? I love shoes and boots. They get me every time. And I love a cold glass of beer or a glass of Pinot Grigio.
