PUBLIC ART FUND PRESENTS âEVERYDAY EDENâ IN NYC w/1 cut
avv/gs set 12/5 #721638
BROOKLYN, N.Y. â Public Art Fund presents a new exhibition of contemporary art at MetroTech Center downtown. âEveryday Edenâ features two new commissions and three recent works by Jedediah Caeser, Tony Feher, Rob Fischer, Paula Hayes, and Nina Katchadourian, and is on view to September 7.
In a variety of ways, these artistsâ works intersect with the vocabulary surrounding todayâs growing interest in ecological concerns, including natural settings, constructed landscapes, decay, recycling, and preservation.
Caesarâs work involves collecting materials â everything from studio scraps to grass and an easy chair â to form assemblages bound together with resin. The resulting sculptures hover between geology and artifice.
Feher uses common, functional materials to create his works of art, drawing attention to what he calls the âtrickâ in the material that sets it off or makes it noticeable. Rather than adding more objects to the world, he makes art from what already exists.
âAs Above, So Belowâ is a new commission by Rob Fischer that utilizes one of his preferred materials â a standard industrial trash dumpster â as its starting point. The artist transforms this ubiquitous element of everyday urban life in a number of ways.
Inspired by the natural world, Hayes typically incorporates plants and other living elements into her work â something she has referred to as âikebana with domestic items,â referencing the term for Japanese flower arrangement.
Katchadourianâs âPlease, Please, Pleased to Meetâchaâ is a sound project inspired by the elusive task of describing birdsong.
MetroTech Center is between Jay Street and Flatbush Avenue at Myrtle Avenue. For more information, www.publicartfund.org 212-980-4575.
