Nighthawk Football Team Wins Playoff Opener In Snowy Conditions
The host and No. 3 seed Newtown High School football team defeated No. 6 Amity of Woodbridge 38-7 in the Class L State Playoff quarterfinal round at Blue & Gold Stadium on December 3.
The game was played in a snow globe-like conditions at times with the temperature around 30 degrees.
Newtown will visit No. 2 New Canaan in the Sunday, December 8 semis at 12:30 pm.
The Nighthawks scored on their opening drive when quarterback Ryan Schoffstall connected with Jayden Taylor on a four-yard touchdown pass on fourth and goal with 6:36 left in the opening quarter.
After a defensive stand capped by Henri Quirk's pass deflection forcing a turnover on downs the Nighthawks marched 70 yards for another TD. Schoffstall threw to James Hartigan for a six-yard TD with 1:11 left in the first.
Newtown's D got another turnover on downs as Nick Pavia came up with a quarterback sack on fourth down. The offense cashed in by driving 62 yards capped by an Ayden Paulos 22-yard rush into the end zone. It was 21-0 with 6:22 to play before the half.
Another Pavia sack led to an Amity punt. Newtown took over with great field position, at its own 42, with 2:16 left in the second quarter. The Hawks drove to the Amity five yard line before adding three points on a Jake Roszman 22-yard field goal with 11 seconds left in the half for a 24-0 cushion.
In the third quarter, Schoffstall hooked up with Taylor for a nine-yard TD on a screen pass.
Amity saw its late-game touchdown answered by a Paulos five-yard run into the paint.
