The Newtown Historical Society will participate in the Annual Holiday House Tour by hosting an open house at its headquarters, The Matthew Curtiss House, at 44 Main Street, on Sunday, December 6.
The house-museum, a fine example of Connecticut saltbox architecture, was constructed circa 1750 and purchased by Matthew Curtiss Jr in 1781. Newtown Historical Society purchased the property in 1971 and restored the house to its original condition.
The public is invited to visit and tour the building at 44 Main Street any time between noon and 4 pm.
Junior and senior docents will be available to answer questions about the house and its history and will provide guided tours by request.
Also during the open house, Rebecca Arkenberg, a textile artist and art historian from Stratford, will do a demonstration on her portable loom and tell the story of Silas Burton, an 18th Century weaver. Ms Arkenberg has been researching Burton and has actually woven some of his patterns that he recorded in a small book currently owned by Stratford Historical Society.
