Philip Michael Carmody

Developed Computer Tools For IBM Used Worldwide

Philip Michael Carmody, 72, of Southbury, died December 1, after a battle with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was born April 8, 1938, in Amityville, N.Y., the son of Valborg and Philip Carmody.

He served in the US Air Force for four years as an airborne radio technician in the Strategic Air Command.

At Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J., he coauthored two patents in the early development of using semiconductors for computer memory. In 1969 he joined IBM as a programmer and as a department manager in the development of computer aided design tools. He retired in 1998.

His hobbies were photography, computers, reading, cheering for the Yankees and Jets, and earlier, golf and traveling.

His wife, Mary Elizabeth Reisz; two daughters, Karen, and her husband Patrick Palmieri, of Newtown and Kathleen Carmody of Maryland; two granddaughters; a brother-in-law; and three nephews survive Mr Carmody.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place Saturday, December 6, at 11 am, at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main Street South, Southbury. Burial will be private. Friends may call in the chapel at Sacred Heart Church, Friday, December 5, from 6 to 9 pm, and a prayer service will take place at 6:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Molokai Museum and Culture Center, PO Box 269, Kualapuu Hawaii 96757. The Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere is in charge of arrangements.
