Occupation: I'm a kindergarten teacher at Sandy Hook School. I've been teaching for over 20 years, and have been at Sandy Hook for 15 years.
Occupation: Iâm a kindergarten teacher at Sandy Hook School. Iâve been teaching for over 20 years, and have been at Sandy Hook for 15 years.
Family: Iâve been married to Bill for 38 years. He just recently retired from AT&T. We have two boys. Eric is 30, a graduate of Newtown schools and a graduate of Keene State College. He is living in Westchester and has his own landscaping business, and works for the town of Eastchester, too. Scott is 27, also a Newtown graduate and a graduate of Johnson State College in Vermont. He lives in Hoboken, N.J., and works in Manhattan for Compass Group as director of events for Bloomberg Media.
Pets: We just recently lost our black Lab, Buddha. Weâve always had dogs, mostly Labs. Now weâre thinkingâ¦.
How long have you been in Newtown? We have been here for 23 years.
What do you like to do in your free time? Mostly, I like spending what free time I have with family and friends. I like to read, and I am a shopper! I just got an iPhone and an iPad, and am learning to use all of this new technology. That takes some time. We also belong to the Corvette Club. My husband has a collectible Corvette. Itâs mostly a fundraising group for charities. Sometimes itâs just the fun of driving somewhere on the weekend with others from the club. We own a small boat and like to go out on Lake Zoar or Lake Lillinonah. And I have to mention, Iâm a big Yankees fan!
Do you have a favorite author? I would say, Nicholas Sparks. I just read Safe Haven by him. And I recently read The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. It has dogs and cars, so that was good. Mostly, I read to relax. I read a lot of Oprahâs choices.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I love the beach. We spend a lot of time in Pompano Beach, Fla., where my brother owns a condo. Weâve been to several islands in the Caribbean, and weâve done a few cruises. Anywhere there is water and sun, Iâm happy.
What is the best thing about Newtown? Our reason for coming to Newtown was for the schools, and the schools are good. Thereâs a family atmosphere and thereâs a rural feel here. The people are so good, and I find they care about others. And, I like seeing my students around town.
Who do you most admire? Probably my dad. He passed away a few years ago, but he was hardworking and just a good man. He was a police captain. He didnât go to college, so it was important to him that we did. Education was big for him. And my mom, too, I totally admire.
Do you have a personal philosophy? Treat others the way you want to be treated. I say it in the classroom all the time, and I do try to live by that.
What makes you laugh? The things the kids in my classroom say. Sometimes it is how they interpret something, or just how they say something.
