The only unfortunate thing about the whole fall of 2004 â what with the two state championships, three conference championships and 102 total wins â is that the Newtown High School community has had so little time to reflect upon it all.
When the girlsâ soccer team battled Trumbull for the CIAC Class LL state championship back on Saturday, November 20, it was with the knowledge â shared by a few players, anyway â that basketball practice started in only two days.
Well, the 2004-05 winter season does not officially start for five more days and before that whole thing gets going letâs take the thing to reflect on the enormity of what happened â the sheer colossal stupendousness of it all.
eTwo state championships
eThree South-West Conference championships
eTwo athletes named All-New England
eOne athlete named All-American
eSix individual and/or team records
eThree players signed with major Division I programs
eA 103-22-1-2 record
eA sick winning percentage of .805
And to top it all off (like the cherry on top of a hot fudge sundae), there was that football victory over Masuk on the day before Thanksgiving. If the fall of 2002 was incredible, then what the heck was this?
The skinny â

Williams and Erin Clark are named All-SWC and Second Team All-State while Amanda Shevlin, Rita Magliocco, Christie Caruso and Meg Regnery are named All-Colonial. Lindsey Coyle and Jessica Gaddis are named All-SWC Honorable Mention.

Atkinson sets team records in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke while the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams both set team records. Atkinson, Conlon, Sally Tabler, Jaclyn Van Waalwijk, Amy Robinson and Maggie Hemingway all earn spots on the All-SWC team. The Lady Nighthawks go on to finish second at the CIAC Class L championships, behind Ridgfield but ahead of Amity Regional.
VOLLEYBALL
12-7
Despite low expectations, opens 2004 season with seven wins in first eight matches and quickly qualifies for South-West Conference and CIAC Class LL tournaments. Wins its first-round LL match before suffering loss to Trumbull. Lisa Morgan is named All-SWC while Diana Grimaldi is named All-Colonial and Becky Huot and Jenna Van Waalwijk are named All-SWC Honorable Mention.
FOOTBALL
7-2-1
After a 54-7 season-opening loss to eventual South-West Conference champion Pomperaug, team wins seven of its next nine games. For want of an extra point, Nighthawks miss out on win over Bunnell and on last play of game miss out on chance to tie (or beat) Brookfield. A win over Masuk on the night before Thanksgiving caps off a terrific season and allows Nighthawks to finish the season ranked seventh in Class L (just 75 points â or one win â out of a playoff spot). Lineman Dan Cascone signs a letter of intent to play for the University of Wisconsin while tight end Brennan Coakley signs a letter of intent to play for Penn State.
