Holiday Open House, Sunday At Historical Society Headquarters
Newtown Historical Society will open The Matthew Curtiss House on Sunday, December 4, from noon until 4 pm, in conjunction with the annual Holiday Festival & House Tour. A fundraiser for Newtown Youth & Family Services, the holiday festival will also be presented on Sunday.
The headquarters for Newtown's historical society, the Curtiss House is at 44 Main Street.
It was constructed about 1750, and is a fine example of New England 18th Century saltbox construction. Costumed docents will lead tours of the house and the collections of the historical society, or visitors are free to tour the house on their own.
The house is maintained as a house museum by the historical society, and is home to a large collection of artifacts from the society's collections. As the house was a residence until the 1970s, the society has chosen to have relics of all three centuries of the house's existence as a residence on display rather than limiting items to the Colonial and early national periods of the building's early existence.
Decorated for the holidays, the open house on Sunday will also feature music by Newtown music teacher Grant Ossendryver. Held monthly in spring and fall, this will be the final open house of 2016.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted and will benefit the historical society.
