A Time To Reach Out For Help
A Time To Reach Out For Help
To the Editor:
We canât be sure how long media coverage of the Penn State sexual assault allegations will last. Traditionally, our society has a relatively short attention span on any topic no matter how important. Exposing abuse in a society that much too often closes its eyes with a ânot in my neighborhoodâ protectionism is an invaluable media service. With its far-reaching, powerful voice, media plays a critical role in breaking the silence â the secrecy that shrouds abuse, whether sexual assault or domestic violence â by bringing awareness to individuals and systems of the issues, how to help victims, and how to cause societal change so that abuse ends.
At the same time, media has a responsibility to victims. Coverage of abuse such as the current sexual assault incidents can unleash a flood of memories, feelings, and triggers for survivors. Responsible media coverage must be consistently embedded with clear information on how victims can immediately access support. Running banners of national or local hotlines during broadcasts or newspaper articles consistently including referral boxes to helping resources are simple steps that achieve safety in coverage.
To all survivors, there is help out there whether it be in traditional settings such as group (and there are male-specific groups!), individual counseling, and crisis hotlines or newer formats such as online support from reliable websites. Help is no longer a one-size-fits-all option, whether you choose one or many formats; what is important is that it works for you!
To the members of the Womenâs Center sexual assault survivor groups: As your advocates and group leaders, we will continue to provide you with a safe place to land, help unlock the secrets of the past, dispel the myths and lies youâve been taught, and be there with you on every step of the journey towards reclaiming your voice. Keep up the good work; this is your time!
