That Monster Media

I’m shocked by the letters re Halloween on Main Street, and the (poorly executed) Christian church exhibit this year. The elephant in the room that no one sees, or is willing to address, is hard to ignore.

And, if it’s a miracle you’re looking for, this extraordinary event in Newtown is a rare one — and it’s been happening right before our eyes: Literally thousands of happy kids and their parents, packed together for hours without a single trace of media: No TV shows, DVDs, head-sets, game boys, boom boxes, movies, concerts, podiums, shopping malls, light shows, or cars. Just the sound of the wind, giggles, and murmur of happy feet shuffling, dancing through leaves.

In fact, I can’t think of a single other event in the entire world today that can boast this remarkable achievement. By most people’s definition, that’s a miracle.

I’m also willing to bet that every parent in Newtown shares my concern about the media, its influence and effects on our kids. We spend half our day restricting their use of it and governing their exposure. And we praise them each time they choose the solace and beauty to explore their own vast intelligence, skills, and talents without its harmful interruption.

So, please, Church Ladies, next year let’s leave the light show and loud speakers behind. Grab your kids and a broomstick and rejoice in this very divine, and sacred event.
