Joseph Frederick Whitney, 86, of Southbury, formerly of Bridgewater, died November 27 at The Watermark at East Hill. He was the beloved husband of Sally (Scully) Whitney. He was born March 7, 1931, in Rutherford, N.J., son of the late Marion (Foley) and Leonard Whitney.

Besides his devoted wife of 62 years, his six loving children and their spouses, Daniel and Helene Whitney of Newtown, Kevin and Marcy Whitney, Ann Marie and Terry Walker, Sharon and Glen Darinzo, Michael Whitney, and Timothy and Laureen Whitney; two sisters, Ann Lee and Mary Lynn Mulholland; and 16 cherished grandchildren survive him.

Mr Whitney spent most of his boyhood in the small village of Susquehanna Depot in northeastern Pennsylvania. He graduated from Niagara University and was a US Army veteran, honorably discharged as a first lieutenant.

Mr Whitney first worked for Ford Motor Company in Michigan, then spent more than 35 years as a financial planning executive with IBM Corporation, with assignments across New York, Maryland, and Europe.

Aside from family, his many joys included traveling the world with Sally, spending long summers at his lake house in Pennsylvania, and winters in southern Florida.

Calling hours are Friday, December 1, from 5 to 7 pm, in the chapel of Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main Street South, Southbury.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Saturday, December 2, at 1 pm, in the church. Burial will be at Bridgewater South Cemetery, followed by a reception in Newtown.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research at michaeljfox.org.

Arrangements are by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury.
