The Newtown Federation of Teachers would like to recognize the following faculty members for their recent achievements:
Newtown High School English teacher Jason Hiruo was a recent guest speaker at UConnâs Asian American Alumni Association fundraiser. He was appointed to the Board of Asian American Alumni and was also asked to teach a course on World War II-era Japanese interment during an upcoming semester at UConn.
Newtown High School English teacher Kathy Swift presented a workshop, âLinking Brain Research to Photo Album Assessment,â at the Connecticut Reading Association Conference.
Newtown High School English chair Jeannetta Miller presented a workshop, âAnalysis, Application and Assessment of Literary Style,â for the Connecticut Reading Association.
Newtown High School Coach Jim Casagrande was named to the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Golf Coach nominee for the 2004 National Coach of the Year Award. He was also named the CHSCA Scholarship Committee Chairman.
Newtown High School social studies teacher Jan Brooks received a $1,000 grant from Channel 13 to help teach a sociology study unit entitled âGender/Sexual Orientation â The Right to Safety in School.â
Hawley teachers Jennifer DâAmico and Brandi Grove received the highest possible score for their BEST portfolios, which were chosen as exemplars for the state of Connecticut.
