Hike At Devil’s Den

WESTON — On Sunday, December 10, from 10 am to 3 pm, The Nature Conservancy will offer a guided eight-mile hike from summit to summit at the 1,756 acre Devil’s Den preserve located on the Weston/Redding border. Labeled “Peak Performance,” the hike is rated moderately strenuous and will start from The Den’s parking lot at the end of Pent Road in Weston.

Hikers will climb up through Ambler Gorge to Ambler Vista, cross the north end of the preserve to the Weston and Redding great ledges with their views over valley and reservoir – then return via Hiltebeitel and Deer Knoll, from whose well-known vantage point hawks can be seen soaring above ridge tops during migration time.

With most of the leaves off the trees, this is a good time to view the area’s rugged natural features. Hike leaders will be natural history guides Jonathan Brochstein and Gary Lupienski. Longtime guides, they will augment the hike with facts and stories about the history of man and nature in the area.

Hikers are encouraged to  wear appropriate hiking shoes and clothing and to pack water and a snack lunch. There is no charge for the program, but reservations are limited and required.

Interested participants should call The Den office at 203/226-4991 weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm for reservations, directions, or additional information.
