The annual event begins for runners and walkers alike at 7:45 am, from the parking lot of Hawley School, 29 Church Hill Road. Both courses — the 5K race and shorter fun walk — both end at Newtown Middle School.

Cost is $25 to run and $20 to walk for those who register in advance. Online registration closes at 5 pm Wednesday, November 26.

Race day registration is $30 and $25, respectively.

In the event that today's snow creates a hazard for participants, organizers will make an announcement by early tomorrow morning.

According to Jen Reilly, one of the event organizers, an email will go to all pre-registered attendees as soon as a decision is made on Thursday morning regarding weather and/or snow conditions. The announcement will be posted on the event website (www.newtownturkeytrot.com) and its Facebook page, Ms Reilly said November 25.

“There is no snow date as of yet, but the Turkey Trot Committee will discuss that as one possible option if the need arises,” she added.

Runners are urged to make sure they check their email before heading out to the race on Thursday. According to a note on the event’s Facebook page, the race will go on “unless we are instructed otherwise by the Newtown Police Departmetn to protect the safety of all.”

The Turkey Trot course will take runners from Hawley School to Newtown Middle School Thursday morning, over a number of roadways in the center of town. Travelers should expect brief delays and/or road closures along the course.
