Police Post Results Of Seatbelt Enforcement

A two-week project, known as the “Click-It or Ticket” seatbelt enforcement campaign, resulted in a higher percentage of motorists using their seatbelts by the end of the project than at its start, police said.

A survey indicated that 90 percent of local motorists were using their seatbelts following the enforcement project, compared to the 86 percent of drivers who were wearing seatbelts before the project began, police said. The project ran from November 8 through November 21.

The Click-It or Ticket project is a nationwide law enforcement program.

During the project, Newtown police worked with police from Brookfield, Bethel, and Redding to stage seatbelt checkpoints in all four towns.

Police listed the statistics for Newtown stemming from the enforcement project.

Police issued 28 infractions and 15 warnings for failure to wear a seatbelt. They made one arrest for drunken driving. Also, they issued 17 infractions and made 49 warnings for speed violations. Additionally, police handed out 30 citations and 54 warnings for miscellaneous vehicular offenses.
