Hawk Swimmers Ninth At State Championships
Newtown High Schoolâs girlsâ swimming and diving team placed ninth among 16 schools in the Class LL state championships this past week. Newtown accumulated 216 points. Greenwich, with 877, earned first place.
The diving portion of the finals was held November 10 at Hamden High and the swimming events took place November 17 at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
Newtown Highâs results are as follows:
200 Yard Medley Relay: Seventh, 44 points, 1:57.29 â Kelley Baylis, Zoe Eggleston, Kelsey McEvoy, and Amy Martinelli.
200 Freestyle: 16th, 11 points, 2:07.73 â Eliza Eggleston; 24th, 1 point, 2:08.67 â Abby Fagerholm.
200 Individual Medley: 24th, 1 point, 2:24.73 â Zoe Eggleston.
50 Free: 15th, 12 points, 25.93 â Martinelli; 19th, 6 points, 26.22 - Baylis; 22nd, 3 points, 26.52 â McEvoy.
100 Butterfly: 16th, 11 points, 1:03.94 â McEvoy.
100 Free: 15th, 12 points, 56.87 - Martinelli; 21st, 4 points, 57.54 â Amanda Mele.
500 Free: 23rd, 2 points, 5:40.86 â Annika Fagerholm.
200 Free Relay: Eighth, 42 points, 1:44.51 â Martinelli, Baylis, Mele, McEvoy.
100 Backstroke: 15th, 12 points, 1:03.24 â Baylis.
100 Breaststroke: 20th, Zoe Eggleston, 5 points, 1:13.83; 24th, 1 point, 1:15.62 â Annika Fagerholm.
400 Free Relay: 11th, 32 points, 3:55.25 â Mele, Abby Fagerholm, Eliza Eggleston, and Zoe Eggleston.
1 Meter Diving: 13th, 14 points, 260.20 â Noelle Benson; 22nd, 3 points, 227.40 â Natalie Poeltl.
The Nighthawks came in 45th among 48 schools at the State Open diving and swimming championships at Hamden and Yale, November 18 and 19. Greenwich won the competition with 480 points and NHS had nine points. The State Open featured the top swimmers from all class sizes throughout the state.
Newtownâs 200 medley relay team was 23rd in a time of 1:58.95 for four points, and the 200 free relay team came in 22nd in a time of 1:44.58 for five points.
