One year after capturing a CIAC Class L state championship, the Newtown High School girls’ swimming & diving team was dealt a more humbling fate with a 13th-place finish at the Class LL state meet last week.

Greenwich and Cheshire – as expected – battled for the top slot, with the Lady Cardinals (847 points) out-dueling the Lady Rams (726.5 points). The Lady Nighthawks finished with 135 points, 92 of those coming through the performances of the 200 medley (14th – 2:02.17), 200 freestyle (9th – 1:45.95) and 400 freestyle (13th – 4:02.62) relay teams.

Individually, Nicole Borruso (14th in diving – 283.50 points) and Emma Atkinson (14th in 100 breaststroke – 1:13.42) had the best performances while Jaclyn Van Waalwijk finished 17th in the 50- (25.97) and 100- (55.87) freestyles.
