Choral Society Holiday Concert Will Honor Red Cross Chapter Centennial

DANBURY — The Connecticut Choral Society will celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Western Connecticut Chapter of the American Red Cross with a Candlelight Holiday Concert on Saturday, December 9, at First Congregational Church, 164 Deer Hill Avenue.

The concert will begin at 8 pm. A portion of each ticket sale will be donated to the Western Connecticut chapter of the American Red Cross.

(A similar concert, to benefit the ARC/Mid-Fairfield County chapter, will be presented on December 10 at 4 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church in Southport.)

The CT Choral Society Chorus and Orchestra, under the direction of John Robert Liepold, will perform Benjamin Britten’s rarely-heard Cantata Misericordium. Britten wrote this moving setting of the parable of the Good Samaritan in 1963 to celebrate the centennial of the British Red Cross.

In addition, the chorus will sing Ralph Vaughan Williams’ popular Fantasia on Christmas Carols and the first part of Bach’s St John Passion along with shorter works of the season and traditional carols for audience, chorus and orchestra.

Tickets, $30, are available from members of the chorus, from the Connecticut Choral Society website (CTChoralSociety.org), or by calling 206-7186.
