Stephen R. Greytak, 91, of Greenville, N.C., and previously of Stratford, beloved husband of Irma Fleming Greytak, died November 21. He was born in Trumbull, Conn., October 10, 1924, the son of the late Anna (Michalka) and Frank Greytak, in his parents’ farmhouse on Daniels Farm Road.

In addition to his wife of 26 years, his three children, George Greytak of Sandy Hook, Linda Vernik of Stratford, and Elaine Kiessling of Woodsville, N.H., survive Mr Greytak. Also cherishing his memory are his eight grandchildren, Aaron Vernik, and his wife Kristina, Timothy Vernik, and his girlfriend Lori, Tracey Lubas, and her husband John, Stephanie Prezioso, and her husband David, Stephan Greytak, Hunter Kiessling, Lauren Kiessling, and Nicole Woods, and her husband Shayne; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr Greytak was a graduate of Bassick High School in Bridgeport and served with the US Marines Corps on Midway Island during World World II. While stationed in Greenville waiting to ship out, he met the love of his life, Irma. He lost touch with her after the war and returned to Connecticut, where he married and raised his family. He later returned to Greensville for a Marine Corps reunion, found Irma again, and they have been together ever since.

He was an accomplished accordion player and his Golden Bells Orchestra played for many weddings and parties in the Bridgeport, Stratford, and valley areas. He made five polka albums and three singles. The Connecticut Post newspaper once named him “The Lawrence Welk of Bridgeport.”

All services will take place Wednesday, November 25, in Greenville, and were arranged by the Wilkerson Funeral Home of Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300 Jacksonville FLA 32256, or at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
