International Education Week In Newtown

Last week, from November 12 to 16, Newtown’s schools individually recognized International Education week with a range of activities.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the United States Department of State and United States Department of Education.

The Newtown International Center for Education (NICE) in conjunction with each of Newtown’s schools planned events for the week.

Sandy Hook School kicked off its celebration of the week early on Friday, November 9, when the Carnival Trio Caribbean Music group performed for students.

Special displays were set up at multiple schools, including Reed Intermediate School and Sandy Hook School.

On Monday, November 12, Hawley Elementary School student Matthew Pereira gave the morning announcement over the school’s loudspeaker, “Hello, my name is Matthew Pereira and today is the beginning of International Education Week. Each morning we will greet you with, ‘Hello, how are you?’ in a foreign language.” Monday’s language was Japanese.

Reed Intermediate School held “International Dress Day” on Tuesday, November 6, and teachers and students dressed in attire from other countries during the day, like student Sophia Spraggin and teacher Karin King, who both wore outfits from Ghana.

On Friday, an International Community Potluck Dinner was held at Newtown High School, and guests were asked to also bring the recipe for the dish they contributed, which will be added to a cookbook to be created by NICE.
