Police Plan Weekend

Sobriety Checkpoint

In its continuing effort to stop drunken driving on local roadways, town police have scheduled a sobriety checkpoint for the night of Friday, November 27, and early morning hours of Saturday, November 28.

Police did not specify the place where the checkpoint would be staged.

Such high-visibility enforcement projects are held to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities caused by drunken driving, according to police Sergeant Douglas Wisentaner. Police publicize such enforcement projects in advance to deter drunken driving, he said.

All motorists driving in both directions through the checkpoint will be stopped and briefly interviewed by police who will be seeking to find drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

A grant from the Federal Highway Safety Program will cover 75 percent of the police overtime costs for the enforcement project.
