NEW HAVEN – As everyone no doubt expected, the battle for the CIAC Class LL state swim championship was between Greenwich and Cheshire … and, truthfully, no one else.

But Newtown High School went into the divisional finals last Wednesday at Southern Connecticut State University looking to do some damage with a relatively small contingent (9 swimmers) and finished 14th overall.

Greenwich scored 810.5 points to grab first and Cheshire was a close second with 791 points. Staples of Westport and Norwalk/Brien McMahon Co-Op were a distant second and third with 439 and 434 points, respectively.

Newtown scored 135 points, 92 of those coming in the three relay events.

The 200 medley relay foursome of Leah Barrett, Emma Atkinson, Lucy Remitz and Jaclyn Van Waalwijk opened the meet up last week with a 10th-place finish at 2:00.59 (.06 off seed time), about 10 seconds behind Greenwich. A little later on, the 200 freestyle relay foursome of Atkinson, Remitz, Van Waalwijk and Hull finished 10th at 1:46.42 (almost a second-and-a-half better than the seed time).

The 400 freestyle relay foursome of Colleen Carroll, Remitz, Liz Kroon and Hull closed out the meet with a very nice 13th-place finish at 3:59.74 (a full three seconds better than the seed time).

Individually, Van Waalwijk carried the Newtown banner very well, finishing 10th in the 100 freestyle at 55.62 (about a half-second better than her seed time) and 18th in the 50 freestyle at 26.00 and earned 17 points for the Lady Nighthawks.

Meanwhile, Atkinson finished 19th in the 200 individual medley at 2:22.06 and 22nd in the 100 breaststroke at 1:13.40 and earned nine points as Barrett added a 20th-place finish in the 100 backstroke at 1:06.55 and earned five points.

With their performances, the 200 medley relay foursome and Van Waalwijk both qualified for the CIAC State Opens.

The ‘Hawks finished the dual meet season at 7-3 and then finished seventh at the South-West Conference championships.
