'Positive Light' Photo Exhibit Sponsored by NYCAAP
âPositive Lightâ Photo Exhibit Sponsored by NYCAAP
Beginning on November 29, NYCAAP (Newtown Youth Creating AIDS Awareness for Peers) is sponsoring the âPositive Lightâ exhibit of photographs taken by young people living with HIV/AIDS. The photos will be on display at the Newtown High School Library until December 3.
On World Aids Day, Wednesday, December 1, the exhibit will be moved temporarily to the Newtown Meeting House for an AIDS Awareness and Memorial evening for the community, beginning at 7 pm. The photos are on loan from the projectâs original founder, Cathy Cornell, a social worker in the Boston area.
The âPositive Lightâ project was created to bring HIV/AIDS to a human level, giving HIV-positive young people a chance to express their feelings about living with their diagnosis, and in many cases keeping it a secret for fear of discrimination, rejection, or even violence.
The teenagers were contacted through their health care providers and given ready-to-use cameras. The photos that resulted are each framed with a caption that describes what the image in the photograph says about the young photographerâs life with HIV/AIDS.
