Newtown Public Schools invites everyone to the Bridgeport Islanders’ Hockey Fights Cancer Night, when the team will honor and support those affected by cancer at one of their games. The special event is planned for Saturday, November 23. Puck drop is 7 pm.

The game will be the Islanders’s home rink, Total Mortgage Arena, 600 Main Street in Bridgeport. The Islanders will be hosting the Charlotte Checkers. A portion of the discounted ticket fee of $24.99 and all proceeds from Chuck-A-Puck — an activity where people throw a puck at the end of the game and see who gets closest to a target — will go towards fighting cancer.

Specifically, the proceeds will be donated to Ann’s Place, a Danbury-based organization that has provided support and resources to those living with cancer and their loved ones for decades. A statement from the Newtown Middle School PTA said the effort is “in honor of those in our schools battling cancer.

“Cancer in some ways affects everyone, and many in our community are or have loved ones directly affected by cancer, so come help us support our community to fight cancer,” the statement continued.

NMS PTA reached out to the Islanders in order to set up the hockey night, according to NMS PTA Vice President Jessie Kenney. She and NMS PTA President Heymi Colon had found them at the CT PTA Symposium, and knew the NMS Student Government was looking for a way to raise money to fight cancer.

Other activities and items will be available during the Islanders Hockey Fights Cancer Night, such as specialty retail items, inflatable games and face painting for children in the venue’s atrium, and an Islanders rally towel and LED bracelet for the first 2,000 fans in attendance. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.

To help promote the big game on Saturday, Islanders mascot Storm visited the middle school this week. Storm and Islanders Community Relations Intern Michaela Kraut were at the Queen Street school on Monday, November 18. Storm excitedly greeted students as they poured into the cafeteria throughout the school day, giving them high-fives and fist bumps as he moved through the room. He also took several photos with students and staff, and even arm wrestled a few students to see who was stronger.

Discounted tickets for Saturday’s game are available at fevo-enterprise.com/event/Newtownmiddle7. For additional information, contact Maggie.Howard@bridgeportislanders.com or call 203-345-4853.
