The Garden Club of Newtown will hold its annual Christmas Greens Sale from 9 am until noon on Saturday, December 6, at Newtown Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street.

Members of the garden club prepare all year for this event by drying plants from their gardens, and collecting pinecones to use in decorating swags, wreaths and table arrangements for the holiday season.  There is always an emphasis on the beauty of nature and fresh plant material such as holly, winterberry, rose hips, boxwood and a wide assortment of evergreens from members' gardens will be incorporated into designs along with other decorative items.

The many creative members of the club always come up with different ways to enhance the wreaths and swags that have traditionally been used as holiday home décor. This year there will be a special emphasis on handmade ornaments made with natural materials.

The sale will also include boxwood trees, centerpiece arrangements with candles, grapevine trees, fire starter boxes, nesting balls and treats for birds, hand painted items, luminaria, wooden stars, homemade jams and many other unique treasures.  An early arrival is recommended for the best selection as this is always a popular event.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, The Garden Club of Newtown uses the profits from this yearly fundraiser to contribute to the community in many ways, including scholarships for Newtown graduates through Newtown Scholarship Association, and support for The Victory Garden and Newtown Forest Association

Among many local projects, the club designed, installed and continues to maintain the gardens at The Matthew Curtiss House, Barb’s Trail, and the Blue Star Highway Memorial Marker at VFW Post 308.

For additional information contact Ginnie Carey at 203-512-7320.

Homemade jars of jam will also be offered during this year’s Garden Club of Newtown fundraiser.
Members of The Garden Club of Newtown held one of their first workshops for the annual Greens Sale on November 18. Many ladies created ornaments that will be used to decorate fresh evergreen wreaths that will be sold on December 6.
Handmade ornaments like this one — a slice of cedar with a hand-drawn evergreen tree — have been created for The Garden Club of Newtown’s Annual Greens Sale this year. The event has an emphasis on handmade ornaments and natural materials, and is always a popular offering during one of the busiest weekends in town.
