A “Plunge For Sandy Hook” event has been set for Sunday, December 8, at Lake Compounce in Bristol, to raise money for the My Sandy Hook Family Fund, which was established following the events of 12/14 to support the families who lost loved ones that day, according to its fundraising site.

Sean Cummings and Molly Goodine came together to create the event. Neither Mr Cummings nor Ms Goodine live in Newtown, but both said this week that they wanted to do something to continue helping the families one year after the event.

Mr Cummings works for the World Adult Kickball Association and is the community coordinator for Connecticut Triumph Kickball of Naugatuck. Ms Goodine, who is a teacher in Waterbury, said she wanted to work with Mr Cummings to do this because of “just being a teacher.”

When thinking about what kind of fun charity event to hold to raise money, Mr Cummings said everything came together quickly for the plunge once Lake Compounce partnered with them.

“In honor of the My Sandy Hook Family Fund we will be hosting a ‘plunge party’ at Lake Compounce Family Theme Park in Bristol, CT,” an event page, called “Plunge For Sandy Hook,” on Facebook reads. “Get ready to make a splash for an amazing cause. Please come out to show your support and don’t let a little chilly water keep you from being a part of this extraordinary opportunity.”

After the plunge a party will be hosted at Bleachers Bar in Bristol.

Mr Cummings said preregistration is preferred, but people can also show up the day of the event to plunge. All plungers are asked to raise a minimum of $50, and the after party tickets are $20 for people who do not make the plunge and $10 for plunge participants.

Mr Cummings said the goal is to raise $10,000. By Wednesday, November 20, he said 40 people had pre-registered for the plunge and 57 people had pre-registered to attend.

Registration for plungers will begin at 8:30 am on Sunday, December 8, and the plunge will take place at 10 am. Plunge participants that raise more than $100 will receive a free dinner, one free drink ticket, and five free raffle tickets, according to the event page on Facebook.

The World Adult Kickball Association is supporting the charity efforts.
