Chamber Ensemble Will Jazz Up Thanksgiving Weekend
Sherman Chamber Ensemble will celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday by offering free matinee concerts with a Latin beat on Saturday, November 29, at 4 pm, at Sherman Congregational Church, and on Sunday, November 30, at 3 pm, at St Andrewâs Church in Kent.
Admission is free and all ages are welcome for an afternoon of musical enjoyment for the whole family.
SCEâs Thanksgiving weekend concerts are fast becoming a welcome part of the holiday tradition in the area. As in past years, this seasonâs offerings include a selection of classical music with surprising twists.
Heitor Villa-Lobos is represented by his Bachiana Brasiliera No 6. Originally written for bassoon and flute, Artistic Director Eliot Bailen has located an arrangement for cello and flute that will allow him to join wife and SCE co-founder, the flutist Susan Rotholz, in the lively duo. Ms Rotholz will also be featured in Tango Etudes for Solo Flute by Astor Piazzolla and Sonata Latino for Flute and Piano by Mike Mower.
Joining Ms Rotholz in the latter will be the acclaimed classical and jazz pianist Ted Rosenthal, returning for his third appearance on SCEâs fall holiday line-up. Mr Rosenthal will also contribute a selection of improvisations for piano and bass based on Brazilian themes.
Mr Rosenthal will also team up with Mr Bailen in The Grand Tango by Astor Piazzolla to round out the afternoonâs program.
An informal reception with light refreshments will follow each concert. Admission is free (donations gratefully accepted at the door). For further information contact Sherman Chamber Ensemble at 860-355-5930.
