Applications Available For UConn’s Master Gardener Course

BETHEL — The University of Connecticut Cooperative Extension System is now accepting applications for the 2001 Extension Master Gardener Program. The objective of the master gardener program is to provide is to provide horticultural training to individuals who have gardening experience and wish to expand their knowledge.

Subject matter is broad-based and intensive, and a comprehensive training manual is provided to each student. Topics include botany, entomology, plant pathology, pesticide safety, integrated pest management, lawns, vegetables, small and tree fruit, herbaceous ornamentals and trees and shrubs.

All participants will be provided with current research and information issues and extensive training in diagnosis and problem solving.

The program consists of 13 classroom sessions, which begin the first week of January and will run through mid-April. Classes meet one day a week from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Participants are expected to be prepared through weekly home study assignments.

The master gardener program reflects 125 hours of training, with 65 hours of classroom work and 60 hours of intern service. The 60-hour internship commitment can be completed through a minimum of 30 hours spent in an Extension Office, Monday through Friday during office hours and approved in-service and/or outreach activities.

Individuals successfully completing the 125 hours will receive a University of Connecticut Extension Master Gardener certificate. The charge for the program is $275, which covers a handbook of all training materials. Scholarships are available based on demonstrated financial need.
