Snapshot: Linda Uhde
Occupation: I have been the assistant administrator for Nunnawauk Meadows for over three years. Working with the staff is wonderful, and I admire their helpfulness and dedication to the facility. I enjoy assisting and interacting with the residents there.
Family: My husband, Steve, an engineer, and I have been married for 18 years. We were friends through school, especially through band. We have a 10-year-old son, Adam, who is a fifth grader at Reed Intermediate School.
How long have you lived here? All my life. My parents were lifelong Newtowners, as well, involved in many Newtown organizations. My dad, who has passed away, was the chief pharmacist at Fairfield Hills Hospital for many years. My mom has worked at the C.H. Booth Library for many years. They were very active in organizations throughout my life, especially with the NHS band.
What do you like to do in your free time? For 30-plus years, I have been dancing with the Lathrop School of Dance. It’s like a second family to me. My sister, my niece, my brother, and my mom all have been, and some still are, involved in it. I enjoy spending time exercising and other outdoor activities with my family and friends. I joyfully immerse myself in Adam’s activities, which include Cub Scouts — including selling their great popcorn — and assisting him with learning trumpet playing, and his budding acting career. He played the role of Genie in Sandy Hook School’s production of Aladdin, Jr, last year, and loved it.
What are you currently reading? I don’t have a lot of time for reading. I like reading The Bee, and keeping up with what’s going on in town. My son has a lot of reading for school and I like being involved with what he’s reading, too.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I’ve been to Cape Cod and Hershey, Penn., many times. We’ve traveled to many places for business and family reasons, and also vacationed at some new places to see what’s out there. Disney and Universal were fantastic! And Washington, DC, has a lot to see, as well.
What is the best thing about Newtown? For me, besides the fact that most of my family lives here, I would say it’s the country character of the town. We’ve had a lot of growth in housing, great services and shops, which improves the quality of life. But a lot of us are here for the view and the fresh air.
What are some of the changes you have seen in Newtown? It’s not good, or bad; they’re just changes. More roads, lights, traffic, and places to go. No more fireworks or pool at Dickinson, and there is a new play space there that’s busy. Halloween now is on Main Street, and fewer kids are making the trek around the neighborhoods. We have larger schools, library, and stores, and more events. Another change is Fairfield Hills becoming Newtown’s municipal center, and NYA, where you can play inside during the winter. Kids who were playing out in fields and streams of farms back then are now playing ball on lit ball fields, some that don’t even need to be mowed. Now we’re searching the Internet and playing video games anywhere you go, instead of tying up the family’s only phone or TV.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? My whole family. Specifically, my mom, for her giving and helpful nature, my dad, for his “laughter is the best medicine,” my sister and brother for always being there, my husband for his love and knowledge, and my son for his genuine innocence, happiness, and love.
If you could meet one person from history, who would it be? I would love to have a dance lesson with Fred Astaire!
Do you have a guilty pleasure? I don’t really have any guilty pleasures. I just like spending time with family and friends.
