Three local authors — Sydney Eddison, Nancy Crevier, and Andrea Zimmermann — have been invited by the Garden Club of Newtown to sign books during the club’s annual Holiday Greens & Gifts Sale on Saturday, December 3, from 9 am to noon.

The event, which also boasts an array of decorated wreaths, centerpieces, and homemade gifts, will be held this year at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street.

Eddison is the author of 12 books — seven gardening books and five books of poetry. She lives with her Jack Russell terrier, Phoebe, on the edge of a clearing in the woods. Through the double glass doors in the kitchen, there is always something interesting to see: a fox floating across the lawn; red-tailed hawks soaring overhead. This is the stuff of which her poems are made.

Eddison will be signing a number of her books including her latest collection of poems, The Sacred Ground of Home: Poems from a country life.

Her gardening books include A Patchwork Garden; A Passion for Daylilies, the Flowers and the People; Gardens to Go: Creating and Designing a Container Garden with photography by Steve Silk; The Gardener’s Palette, Creating Color in the Garden, also with photography by Steve Silk; and Gardening for a Lifetime, a winner of the National Garden Club’s Award of Excellence.

Newtown resident and Minnesota native Nancy Crevier has been writing poetry for most of her life. She will be signing her debut book of poetry, The Peach Quartet and Other Poems, a collection gathered from 40-plus years of writings and is a reflection on love, life, loss, and nature.

Crevier joined the staff of The Newtown Bee as a reporter in 2005, and went on to become the editor of the newspaper. She retired in 2021, and continues to live and write in Newtown.

Zimmermann is a writer and artist who lives in Newtown. She will offer four books: her latest amateur-sleuth mystery, A Legacy of Lies: A Rock Ridge Mystery, set in a small fictional Connecticut town with a cast of eccentric characters; The Great Danbury State Fair, which profiles the 112-year-old fair; The Case Files of Detective Laszlo Briscoe: True Crime in Newtown 1889-1933, which chronicles 63 dastardly crimes perpetrated in Newtown; and a book written by her mother, Lois Zimmermann, that was published posthumously this fall, Talbot’s Quest, a novel of intrigue with a wonderful cast of characters.

Prior to writing books, Zimmermann was a features writer for The Newtown Bee, then a freelance journalist for The New York Times Connecticut Weekly section and regional magazines.

The Greens & Gifts Sale is the Garden Club’s main fundraising event and all are welcome to attend. For over 30 years this annual event had featured uniquely crafted holiday items handmade by members.

This year’s sale will again offer an inventory of decorated wreaths, boxwood trees, and centerpieces. There will also be knitted accessories, a new offering.

Proceeds from Holiday Greens & Gifts enables The Garden Club of Newtown to maintain The Blue Star Memorial and three other gardens in town as well as contributing funds to FAITH Food Pantry, Newtown Scholarship Association, The Newtown Fund, and Newtown Forest Association, among others.
