Football Team’s Streak Snapped In State Title Game

Newtown’s eighth grade football, comprised of players who have done nothing but win in New England play since they were in fourth grade, finally tasted defeat in a 58-42 loss to Meriden in the State Championship game on November 14.

Newtown went down fighting as they boys found themselves down by four scores at one time and got to within a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The power running Raiders dominated the ground game while the high flying spread offense of Newtown threw for close to 400 yards and added another 100 yards on the ground. Troy Frangione and Will Dalton each caught a pair of touchdowns, and Rat Rubino and Colton Smith each ran in a score. Connor Roche and Julian Dunn also contributed with receptions to move the chains.

The Newtown eighth graders finished their youth football careers with a 52-1 record in New England play, and a 55-2-1 overall record which included a national championship, state, and New England regional titles.
