Farewell To A Friend

Deeke, a chocolate lab who was one of three dogs who made The Newtown Bee their home during the work week, died on Wednesday, November 17. He was four weeks shy of celebrating his 12th birthday. Deeke was an endlessly patient dog, allowing friends of all ages to pet him, bump into him, and even dress him in silly hats and costumes (like a cape for Flag Day, shown here) without as much as an impatient growl. When his “cousins” Starr and Rosie, the two golden retrievers who survive him at The Bee, would welcome visitors entering the front door at 5 Church Hill Road, Deeke would often look up from his resting position in the front office or trot from the back of the building to offer solid backup for his girls. We miss him, and thank his owner, David Smith, for sharing Deeke with us for so much of his life and ours. We have no doubt that by now Deeke has begun fetching the sticks and chasing the balls he was unable to run after during the final weeks of his happy life. We hope his tail is wagging again.
