Babe Ruth Fall Champs Crowned

Newtown Black defeated Newtown Blue 10-9 in the finals of the Babe Ruth 13-15 division this past week. Newtown Black came back from an 8-3 deficit by scoring seven runs in the fourth through sixth innings to avert the upset by the upstart Newtown Blue team.

The winners were led offensively by Colin Dutt and Harry Dupuy with two hits each. Tom Floros scored twice, Wiley Zahansky and Jason Ferrari each recorded a hit, Adam Israel scored a key run to tie the game at 8-8 in the fifth inning. Kevin Liniger, Mike Daubert, and Jim Parker all pitched well and combined for seven strikeouts in the victory.  Brennan O’Sullivan made a great catch in left field to thwart a rally in the sixth inning, and David Vallerie played solid defense.

The Blue team was led by Matt Wood, who had 3 hits, and Colton Moroney and Jeffrey Peterson who had two hits each. Charlie Huegi pitched six strong innings and recorded six strikeouts. 

In the semifinals, Newtown Black defeated Newtown Blue 4-1 in a well-played game. Troy Larsen pitched seven strong innings for Newtown Blue by striking out ten batters and yielding only six hits. Virgil Procaccini and Will Swain each had a hit, and Brock Chimileski played solid defense behind the plate. The Newtown Black team was led by the pitching of Jim Parker and Mike Daubert who combined to throw a two-hitter, struck out ten batters, and give up an unearned run. The offense was led by Tom Floros who singled, doubled, and had an RBI, and Colin Dutt who walked twice and had a hit to knock in a key run. Kevin Liniger knocked in a run in the fourth to tie the game and Jake Simonson walked and scored.

In the other semifinal game, Newtown Blue defeated Newtown Maroon 6-5 for only its second win of the season. Daryl Silverlieb pitched a complete game for the winners and struck out the last batter with the bases loaded to pull off the upset over the heavily favored Newtown Maroon.
