The Inland Wetlands Commission (IWC) is seeking a person to a fill a vacancy on the land use panel that was created by the resignation of longtime member Wesley Gillingham last spring.

The agency is authorized to have seven appointed members. The group administers the town’s regulations on the protection of wetlands and watercourses, acting on applications for permits to conduct regulated activities. The panel also oversees the town’s forest practices regulations.

The IWC meets on the second and fourth Wednesday nights of each month, except in November and December when it meets once each month.

Commission members are required to participate in site inspections of properties that are the subject of permit applications. No specific experience is required to be a member, but members are expected to complete a series of educational sessions held by state agencies such as the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Also, members are expected to be well informed about applicable state and local regulations affecting the IWC.

People who are interested in joining the commission are asked to submit a letter describing their interest, plus their resume, by December 15 to: Land Use Agency, Inland Wetlands Commission, 3 Primrose Street, Newtown CT 06470; Attention: IWC Chairman Anne Peters.

People with questions may contact the Land Use Office at 203-270-4276, from 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

IWC appointments are made by the first selectman, with the concurrence of the Board of Selectmen.
