Salvatore J. Lauro, 88, of Redding died on November 18 at Harborside Glen Hill Nursing Center in Danbury. He was the husband of the late Emma (Cozart) Lauro.
Mr Lauro, who lived with his daughter in Redding since 1998, was a former Waterbury and New Haven resident.
He was the grandfather of Jeanmarie M. Hoover of Sandy Hook.
Mr Lauro was born on January 8, 1911 in Waterbury, a son of the late Rocco and Carmella (Salvatore) Lauro. He was a graduate of Fordham University and New York University Law School. A New Haven resident since 1949, he was the proprietor of Lauroâs Market and Liquor stores for 20 years. He then worked for the Knights of Columbus until his retirement. Throughout his business career, Mr Lauro was also an avid private investor and philanthropist.
Mr Lauro was a member and faithful communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Waterbury and later in life of the Sacred Heart Church in Georgetown. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as a survival instructor in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Mr Lauro is survived by his daughter, Barbara L. Roche of Redding; a sister, Fannie Lauro of Waterbury; five other grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on November 20 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Waterbury. Following cremation, burial of cremains took place in Umpawaug Cemetery, Redding.
