3-Vehicle Crash Sends 17-Year-Old To Hospital
Connecticut State Police reported a three-vehicle crash on I-84 East that occurred around 6:14 am Saturday, November 12. The crash closed one lane and the shoulder for nearly two hours, and sent one driver to the hospital.
According to the CSP report a tractor-trailer truck being operated by Kevin Bascomb, 43, of Lynn, Mass., was parked in the right shoulder of I-84 East near the Exit 11 ramp. At that approximate time, a 2019 Mercedes-Benz Spring 3500 box truck being operated by Alcilito A. Dagraca, 34, of Waterbury, was traveling in the slow speed lane.
At the same time, Thomas Simpson, 17, of Wallingford, was operating a 2003 Chevrolet Impala, also eastbound, when that vehicle veered into the right shoulder striking the metal beam guardrail.
It was unclear, according to the CSP report, which lane Simpson was traveling in before his vehicle veered. The Impala crashed into the rear of the tractor-trailer truck. Simpson lost control of the vehicle, which went spinning into the slow speed lane and was subsequently struck on the passenger side door by the box truck.
Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and at least one paramedic also responded to the crash. Simpson was transported to Danbury Hospital for suspected minor injuries, according to the police report. A spokesperson for the hospital had no information concerning Simpson's status when contacted on November 17.
CT DOT was also sent to the scene to cover a large fluid spill from one of the vehicles. Approximately 50 feet of metal beam guardrail was also damaged.
The Impala and the box truck were towed from the scene due to disabling damage to both vehicles. Bascomb was able to drive the tractor-trailer truck from the scene despite some damage.
Bascomb was found to have contributed to the accident by illegally parking in the right shoulder of a limited access highway. CSP said Simpson was found to have contributed to the accident by failing to maintain his lane.
