Settling On A Location For A Permanent 12/14 Memorial
To the Editor:
I wanted to share the work the Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission (SHPMC) is doing to establish a memorial for the victims of 12/14/12. At the last Conservation Commission meeting, mem-bers of the SHPMC shared that out of 30 open space properties that the Land Use Agency provided for their review, they have determined that at this time, the High Meadow at Fairfield Hills is the best place for the memorial. (For those unfamiliar, the High Meadow is the large meadow adjacent to the paved walkway that leads up to the water towers.)
While the SHPMC stressed that no plans or locations are definite at this time, an overlay map draw-ing was shared indicating a driveway and parking lot leading to the center of the High Meadow with the memorial structure not yet determined.
For those residents using the High Meadow on a regular basis, now is the last-minute time to come forward with ideas and suggestions for a memorial, whether on this property or others. The SHPMC hosted public forums last winter in January and February.
The next meeting of the SHPMC is slated for 7 pm Thursday, January 14, 2016 at the Municipal Cen-ter, 3 Primrose Street, Newtown. Sincerely,
