Led by four team record-setting efforts, Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team placed fourth in the Class L State Championships. The diving competition took place at Middletown High on November 10, and the swimming events took place at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven on November 16.

In the diving competition, Kaitlin Yeaton placed 19th with a score of 289.00, and Ella Hall was 24th with a 238.10.

When all was said and done, Newtown scored 404 points. Darien won the competition with 807; Cheshire was second with 555 and New Canaan third with 512. Pomperaug of Southbury rounded out the top five with 379.

Brianna Deierlein won the 200 yard freestyle race in a lifetime best time of 1:51.42, beating a team record that had stood since 1997.

Deierlein also won the 100 backstroke event, clocking in at 56.44, another career best effort. In doing so, Deierlein shattered her own school record in the event. Shayna Millard came in fifth in the 100 backstroke event in 1:01.16.

The 200 medley relay team of Deierlein, Cate Fischer, Grace Fischer, and Alexa Kwarcinski was second in 1:52.17.

Newtown’s 400 free relay of Limani, Kolb, Millard, and Deierlein placed third, clocking in at 3:36.53 — yet another team record.

Grace Fischer earned fourth in the 100 breaststroke race with a time of 1:08.39, breaking her team record. Kwarcinski was seventh in 1:09.18.

Norah Kolb was sixth in the 50 free in 24.89.

The 200 free relay team of Kwarcinski, Millard, Kolb, and Diellza Limani was sixth in 1:41.22.

Newtown had two finishers among the top ten in the 100 free as Kolb placed seventh in 54.48 and Millard was tenth in 54.82.

Ella Seaver raced in the backstroke event, Anna Shew competed in the 500 freestyle race.
