Richard Wallace Newman, Sr, 88, a longtime resident of Newtown, died peacefully at his home in Stratford on November 17, surrounded by his wife, Jane, and family, following a long illness. He was born in Stratford, on December 4, 1927, to Willard and Harriet Newman.

After graduating from Milford High School, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces from 1946 to 1949. He served as a radar operator on the B-17 "Flying Fortress" bomber while stationed in Panama.

He met his wife Jane Burton while attending Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. They were married in 1951 and resided in Newtown for 43 years before moving to Stratford. In 1990, he retired from the Eaton Corporation in Bethel, formerly the Consolidated Controls Corporation, after a long career in manufacturing management.

He was a lifetime member of the Fairfield County Fish and Game Club and was an avid skeet and sporting clays shooter. In addition, he loved to fly, was an avid football fan, and loved spending time with his family.

His wife of 66 years, Jane; sons, Michael and wife, Judy, of Southlake, Texas, and Richard Jr and wife, Jan, of Danbury; granddaughters, Gail Newman Beaubien and husband, Jim, of Ipswich, Mass., and Leigh Newman Malik and husband, Ales, of Hanford, Calif., survive him. His sisters, Doris Persson and Ruth Kilpatrick, and brothers, William and Arthur Newman, predeceased him.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at St Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport and the in-home caregivers and hospice nurses who provided comfort to him in his final weeks.

Per his request no funeral or memorial services will be conducted.
