WCOC To Host Public Event

At Nature Center

ANSONIA — Western Connecticut Orienteering Club (WCOC) will hold its next meet on Saturday, November 25, at Ansonia Nature Center. Registration and starts will run from 10 am to noon.

Greg Balter will be setting up the event with Sergei Zhyk setting courses. Mr Balter and Mr Shyk are on the US Orienteering Team, and funds from the event will be donated to support team activities, including competing next summer in the World Orienteering Championships in Ukraine.

Participants will use an orienteering map and a compass to find their way around the area seeking orange and white flags at various landmarks. These features are marked on the map and act as checkpoints along the course.

Participants decide on the route to the feature and punch a score card to confirm finding the flag. In a competition, the winner punches all the flags in the shortest time.

All standard courses, from beginner to expert as well as a shirt sprint course, will be available. Instruction and training will be available for beginners.

Cost is $6 per person (or $4 for members). The nature center’s entrance is on Deerfield Road.

Call George Walker at 860-658-7963, or send an email to WCOC.info@comcast.net for additional information.
