School Board Recognizes AP Scholars

The aroma of brewing coffee drew guests to a table where the strong chocolate scents of baked brownies held their attention prior to last Wednesdayâs Board of Education meeting. Refreshments welcomed the many people gathered, including new teachers, to the Newtown school system and their friends. Also waiting in the crowd were the handful of Advanced Placement students recognized by the board that evening.
As the bustle in the Reed Intermediate School quieted, board Chairman Elaine McClure spoke.
âIt is nice to recognize the Advanced Placement scholars, itâs a treat,â she said. With similar compliments, Superintendent of Schools Evan Pitkoff said, âThis is exciting and fun for me to honor the students who have achieved a great dealâ¦â He noted how they excelled in examinations, and some courses could be used toward college credits. Each honoree spoke briefly about college and future aspirations.
Expressing what would turn out to be a similar sentiment among his fellow advanced students, Alex Hennessey said, âI donât have any idea about where I want to go to collegeâ¦â Also like the peers gathered with him last week, he shared another similarity. Alex had a good idea about what he wanted to learn. He said he has premed plans.
Stating that he would definitely go to college, Stephen Kramer wants to study âsomething in psychology or something in that vicinity, but I am not sure where I am going to take it yet.â Nikia McFadden said she was hoping to major in math, which drew a cheer from some in the audience. Also favoring math or physics was Daniel Pane. He is also undecided about a particular college.
David Wilkins touted a preference for either the liberal arts or humanities, he said. Brian Pennarola explained, âI am thinking about premed or chemical engineering.â
Premed also appealed to Sean Ryan who intends to pursue music also. Unable to join his friends was the eighth Advanced Placement honoree, James McDade.
