Marijuana Arrest

Police report they spotted three youths who are under age 16 running into a wooded area near Jo-Mar Drive in Sandy Hook on the morning of November 9, after which they investigated.

A bag of marijuana was found on one of the youths, who is a 15-year-old boy, police said. Police arrested that boy on a charge of possession of less than four ounces of marijuana.

The boy is scheduled to appear November 27 in Danbury Juvenile Court. State law conceals the identities of people under age 16, known as juveniles, who are charged with crimes.

Criminal Trespassing

On the morning of November 9, a 17-year-old boy who is not a Newtown High School student, was found walking in the hallways and the fitness center at the school, police said. Police arrested the boy, charging him with second-degree criminal trespassing.

The boy was released into the custody of his mother and is scheduled to appear December 1 in Danbury Youthful Offender Court. People who are charged with crimes, who are 16 or 17 years old, are categorized as youthful offenders under state law, and thus their identities are concealed from public disclosure.

Underage DUI

About 2 am November 12, police stopped a young motorist on Philo Curtis Road in Sandy Hook for failing to display two marker plates on the vehicle being driven. After investigating, police charged the youth with driving under the influence and with failure to display two marker plates.

The person that police arrested was a “youthful offender,” meaning that they are either 16 or 17 years old, and thus their identity is concealed from disclosure under state law.

After arrest processing, police released the youth from custody on $100 bail for arraignment before a judge on December 1 in Danbury Youthful Offender Court.

 

Four Charges

About 4:30 pm November 9, police report a two-vehicle accident on Church Hill Road in front of the Blue Colony Diner.

In that accident, motorist Colin Conley, 19, of New York City, who was driving a 2000 Jeep sport-utility vehicle westward on Church Hill Road, attempted to make a left turn, but collided with eastbound motorist Gail Trautz, 59, of Hamilton, N.J., who was driving a 2003 Honda sport-utility vehicle, police said. There were no injuries.

Police arrested Conley on charges of making a restricted turn, driving without a license, interfering with police, and criminal impersonation.

Conley was scheduled to appear in court on November 13 to answer the charges, police said.

Sandy Hook Crash

About 5 pm November 10, motorist Janet McLaurin, 42, of Conway, Mass., who was driving a 1997 Subaru sedan eastward Berkshire Road, stopped and was waiting for westbound traffic to clear so that she could make a left turn into a driveway near  51 Berkshire Road, police said.

Eastbound motorist Suzanne Ettinger, 60, of Chestnut Hill Road, who was driving a 1999 Ford sedan, then drove into the rear end of the Subaru, police said.

McLaurin and two child passengers in the Subaru were transported to Danbury Hospital to be evaluated for injuries, police said. Ettinger received an infraction ticket for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Audi Vs Toyota

Two sedans collided on Sugar Street, near Key Rock Road, about 5:41 on November 8.

Motorist Barbara Machado, 63, of Sugar Street was driving a 1997 Audi sedan westward, as motorist Kelly Plummer, 29, of Longview Terrace was driving a 2001 Toyota sedan eastward, police said.

For an unknown reason, the Audi turned to the left and collided with the Toyota, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Machado an infraction ticket for failure to keep to the right on a curve.

Subaru Vs Deer

About 8:50 am November 11, motorist Robert Simon, 53, of Waterbury, who was driving a 2003 Subaru station wagon southward near 46 Toddy Hill Road, encountered a deer that had entered the road, police said. The auto and the deer collided. Simon was not injured.

Mailbox Vandalism

Sometime on October 30 or 31, someone damaged a custom-made residential mailbox, which is positioned at 20 Lake Road, police report. The crime is third-degree criminal mischief. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Officer Larissa Nosal at 426-5841.

 Log Splitter Larceny

Sometime between October 7 and November 5, an Agway Briggs & Stratton log splitter, Model VH-9528, was stolen from a Berkshire Road property, police report. Police are investigating the theft and ask anyone with information to contact them at 426-5841.

Liberty Drive

Sometime between October 21 and October 30, approximately $600 in cash was stolen from a home on Liberty Drive, police said. Police are investigating the theft and ask anyone with information on the crime to contact them at 426-5841.

Burgerittoville Break-In

A burglar broke a rear window at Burgerittoville, a restaurant at 55 Church Hill Road, sometime between 8 pm on November 7 and 11 am on November 8 to gain entry to the premises, police said.

The thief stole cash from the business. Police are investigating and ask anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact them at 426-5841.

House Burglary

On November 9, police learned of a burglary and theft at a Bradley Lane home, in which the burglar made off with more than $10,000 worth of jewelry. The crimes involved are first-degree larceny and third degree burglary. Those with knowledge of the crime are asked to contact police at 426-5841.

Mt Pleasant Road

About 10:42 pm November 10, motorist William Smith, 57, of Sherman was driving a 2006 Mercedes-Benz sedan eastward on Mt Pleasant Road, when a deer entered the roadway, police report. The auto and the deer collided. Smith was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Toyota Vs Acura

Motorist Marilyn Atkinson, 74, of Westwood Terrace, who was driving a 2006 Toyota sedan northward on Saw Mill Road about 11:47 am November 9, stopped at a stop sign at that street’s intersection with Mt Pleasant Road, according to police.

The Toyota then pulled out onto Mt Pleasant Road, but collided there with a westbound 1999 Acura sedan  driven by Robert Bassett, 59, of Monitor Hill Road, police said.

 There were no injuries. Police issued Atkinson a written warning for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.

Three MV Violations

On November 15, police charged motorist Stephanie Espinal, 20, of Danbury with a taillamp violation, with driving with a suspended vehicle registration, and with failure to display a marker plate. Police released Espinal on a written promise to appear December 5 in Danbury Superior Court.

SUV Into Pole

About 5:08 pm November 8, motorist Janneth Astudilio, 24, of Danbury was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer northward on Mt Nebo Road, when a northbound noncontact vehicle, which was in front of the Ford, stopped in order to make a left turn into a driveway at 18 Mt Nebo Road, police said.

The Ford served to the right to avoid hitting the vehicle, but instead sideswiped a utility pole, police said. Neither Astudilio, nor three passengers in the Ford, were injured.

Police verbally warned Astudilio for making a restricted turn.
