Club Fosters Global Awareness

The Newtown High School Environmental Club, formed by Haley Keane and Monica Warek, joined with the former Ecology Club started last year by Kelly Lindell, and recently held GAFA, Global Awareness Festival of the Arts. October 22 at the Newtown Teen Center saw film screenings, poetry readings, art displays, live music, speakers, and a variety of vendors. The $344 raised will go to the club to provide a more efficient recycling program at the high school and will put the money toward other campaigns and events.

The festival would not have been successful without the help of Mrs Mangold for opening the teen center and helping the effort, Blue Jay Orchards and Bagel Delight for the food and drink donations, all the vendors and the bands — Daria Musk Trio, Scarlet Carson, Kevin King and Bad Day For The Beach, the club advisors Mrs Blake, Mrs Baumgarnter, and Mr Blossom, and Gail Warek. additional thanks goes to Mike Sanchez for the use of his truck and Phil and Joanne Keane for assisting.

Upcoming is the Buy-Nothing Day on November 24. Participants will buy as little as possible to raise awareness of needless shopping.
