Time To Help The Newtown Fund Holiday Basket Program
The Newtown Fund is asking for the community's help to bring joy to families in need during the upcoming holiday season.
The Holiday Basket Program, sponsored by The Newtown Fund, annually benefits more than 80 Newtown families who qualify for assistance by providing holiday gifts and food.
Volunteers are needed to "adopt" a family; make a monetary contribution so the The Fund can purchase individual gifts and gift certificates for food, gas, shoes, etc.; and deliver the items to the families.
"Frequently volunteers have approached one of us on Depot Day to tell us that they and their family were once recipients of a Holiday Basket," says Linda Bates, president of The Newtown Fund. "They wouldn't have been able to have a happy holiday without the kindness and generosity of the Newtown community. They wanted to give back by helping now that their circumstances had changed. This is the reason the Newtown Fund exists!"
To "adopt" a family, reach out to The Newtown Fund online at thenewtownfund.org or contact Layne Lescault at 203-270-6481.
Those who would like to donate to the fund can send a tax-deductible contribution to The Newtown Fund, PO Box 641, Newtown CT 06470.
Depot Day this year will take place Saturday, December 17, starting at 7:30 am, at Fraser Woods School, 173 South Main Street.
Volunteers will be needed at the wrapping table, in the parking lot loading cars, in the gym organizing the baskets, in the kitchen, and delivering the baskets to the families.
Individuals are being sought to become year-round members and help on The Newtown Fund Board of Directors.
Started in 1959, The Newtown Fund provides funds to qualified individuals and families in need year-round, including help paying for medical expenses, heating fuel during the winter, and other emergency requests from the Newtown Social Services department.
All monies raised are spent in Newtown, and there are no administrative costs to run the fund except for postage and paper for fundraising.
