NEW HAVEN -  The Newtown High School swim team completed its 2001 season with a 15th-place finish at the CIAC Class L state championships last week at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.

NEW HAVEN –  The Newtown High School swim team completed its 2001 season with a 15th-place finish at the CIAC Class L state championships last week at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.

Cheshire took first easily with 646 points and Ridgefield was a distant second at 229. Newtown took 15th with 51 points.

The results:

The 200 medley relay team of Amy Robinson, Margaret Randall, Lauren Kotwicki and Margaret Ashey was 13th overall at 2:08.13. The 200 freestyle relay team Caitlin Malloy, Kotwicki, Ashey and Melissa Rushefski was 14th overall at 1:55.08. And in the 400 freestyle relay, the team of Robinson, Kotwicki, Ashey and Rushefski was 16th overall at 4:15.30.

Individually . . .

In the 200-yard individual medley, Ashey was 17th overall at 2:28.12 and in the 500-yard freestyle was 12th overall at a crisp 5:44.89. Rushefski was 12th overall in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:11.91 and 17th overall in the 500 free at 5:58.87. In the 100-yard backstroke, Robinson was 12th overall at 1:10.20.

The trials were held at the Cornerstone Aquatic Center in West Hartford, with the top 18 finishers qualifying for the finals. Freshman diver Kim Mayers competed in the trials and finished 20th overall, missing out on the finals.
