Launched just over six months ago, Newtown Rides provides rides to local senior citizens who want to get to in-town locations. Destinations include everything from banks, hair salons and barbers, nail salons, and C.H. Booth Library to Newtown Senior Center, a post office, a cemetery, restaurants, markets, Edmond Town Hall, Newtown Community Center, and Newtown Municipal Center.

The program is part of the Chore Services program offered by Friends of Newtown Seniors (FONS).

As Co-Chair Beverly Bennett-Schaedler put it during an April kick-off event, “We want everyone to be able to live, shop, and play locally. Rides in Newtown are only a phone call away.”

For seven months, rides have been offered to residents age 55 and up on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in two-hour slots running 10 am-noon and 12-2 pm.

Bennett-Schaedler has announced a gathering for current and future drivers. Anyone already involved in the program, and those who would like to become involved, are all invited to a presentation scheduled for Wednesday, November 20.

The program will begin at noon at My Place Restaurant, 8 Queen Street. A review of the program to date and discussion of future plans is scheduled.

Reservations are requested and available by calling 203-430-0633.
