Hit Mail Truck, Oncoming Car

Newtown Police report Lisa Charette, 49, of West Haven, operating a 2000 Nissan Maxima, was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road at 2:01 pm October 25. Faith Demaio, 18, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2003 Nissan Altima, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road. Police say Charette attempted to pass a USPS delivery truck operated by Richard Knickerbocker, 63, of Sandy Hook, who was traveling from one mailbox to the next. During the attempted pass, Charette struck the delivery truck’s rear bumper before crossing over the center line and striking Demaio’s vehicle. Demaio’s vehicle lost control and traveled off the road before hitting a culvert.

Demaio was transported by Newtown EMS for a possible injury. Charette’s and Demaio’s vehicles were towed.

Charette was issued infractions for unsafe passing and illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance.

Collision At Highway Exit

Newtown Police report Brennah Rogers, 24, of Southbury, operating a 2017 Nissan Rogue, was exiting Interstate 84 West exit 9 off-ramp onto Hawleyville Road at 7:02 am October 28. Leah Ghosh, 16, of Newtown, operating a 2022 Mazda CX-30, was turning left to enter Interstate 84 West from Hawleyville Road. Rogers’ vehicle struck Ghosh’s vehicle front to rear.

No injuries were reported. Rogers vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.

Rogers was issued a verbal warning for failure to keep a safe distance.

Bicycle Hits Car

Newtown Police report Myles Coleman, 13, of Newtown, riding a bicycle, was traveling northbound on Edmond Road at 3:50 pm October 28. Manuel Uzhca-Urgilez, 44, of Danbury, operating a 2007 Honda CR-V traveling northbound on Edmond Road was turning into Church Hill Road. Coleman’s bicycle struck Uzhca-Urgilez’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken.

Hit And Run Driver Sought

The Newtown Police Department is looking for the public’s assistance in identifying the vehicle that struck the front right corner of a dark colored Jeep Wrangler while parked in the Marygold’s parking lot sometime after 11 pm October 29. The vehicle was located in the side parking lot of Marygold’s, located at 19 Main Street.

Failure To Obey Stop Sign

Newtown Police report that Thomas Boccuzzi, 64, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling southbound on Walnut Tree Hill Road at the intersection of Church Hill Road. Samantha Henriques, 20, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road in the area of Walnut Tree Hill Road. Police say Boccuzzi entered into the eastbound lane of traffic on Church Hill Road and the front right corner of Boccuzzi’s vehicle struck the left rear corner of Henriquez’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Boccuzzi was issued a written warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

Backed Into Each Other

Newtown Police report that Valerie Sorrentino, 85, of Ridgefield, operating a 2004 Toyota Highlander, was in a private parking lot on Queen Street. James Morley, 73, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Mercedez-Benz, was in the same lot. Both vehicles backed into each other.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken as the incident occurred on private property.

Struck Parked Car

Newtown Police report that Michael Neiman, 77, of Newtown, operating a 2005 GMC Sierra, was traveling northbound on Main Street at 5:17 pm November 3. An unoccupied 2018 GMC Yukon owned by Jason Harris of Southbury was parked in a westbound-facing parking spot on the right side of the roadway, behind an also unoccupied 2019 Volvo XC90, owned by Alexis Divernieri of New Fairfield, in a westbound-facing parking spot. Police say Neiman made a left turn from Main Street onto West Street and struck the driver’s side rear of the Harris’ vehicle, which then rolled forward and struck the rear of Divernieri’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neiman’s vehicle was towed due to damage.

Neiman was issued a verbal warning for failure to maintain a lane.

Hit By Deer

Newtown Police report that Kim Venezia, 56, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2018 Acura RDX, was traveling eastbound on Pearl Street at 7:29 pm November 4. Three deer jumped out in the roadway and Venezia stopped her vehicle to avoid hitting them. When the deer crossed, she began to pull forward, and an additional deer jumped out from the side of the road and struck her driver’s side front fender, causing minor damage. The deer ran off into the woods.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
