Safety Belt Crackdown Planned
Newtown Police Sergeant Douglas Wisentaner says town police will step up their enforcement of automobile safety belt and child safety seat laws during the period from November 17 through 30.
Sgt Wisentaner reminds motorists that they should always buckle, always obey posted speed limits, and never drink alcohol and drive.
âObviously, no one wants to face the holidays with the loss of a loved oneâ due to an auto accident, the sergeant said. Newtown police will increase public awareness of basic driving safety rules and will heighten enforcement with the goal of a fatality-free holiday season, he said.
Driver courtesy and getting sufficient rest before driving also contribute to highway safety, he added.
The safety belt compliance campaign is known as âClick It or Ticket.â The enforcement campaign will focus on teenage drivers and young adults, who are the people least likely to use safety belts.
âBy buckling up their seat belts, teens could save more than just money from hefty fines. They could save their lives,â according to Sgt Wisentaner.
